| Marzipan fruit, Taormina |
Up by 8am and to the bar around the corner for our breakfast. Thought it was organised with the landlady but apparently we get a discount only. Lovely breakfast. Café macchiato and a chocolate croissant, followed by a strawberry
granite (shaved ice with strawberry pulp). This is apparently a typical Sicilian breakfast. Yum. Bought a few necessary cream
cannoli, bread etc for our train trip and off to the bus down to the train station at the bottom of the hill. This is a seriously horseshoe bend road, and extremely tight for the bus on a number of corners. Waited only 10min for the train to Messina and then a 1hr wait for the next train to Palermo. Latter trip was 3½ hours but it went very quickly and we always enjoy travelling by train.

| Dust in Palermo |
Objected to having to pay 0.80 euro (1.50) for the toilet at the railway station but needs must. Lots of hotels, B&B places in the multi-story buildings near the railway station and found a good one very quickly. Even know where to catch the bus to the airport in a few days’ time so we feel well set up. Only tomorrow to look around Palermo before we wing our way to Barcelona. It’s been great the last week without having to search out places/stuff for the book and just being able to kick back and be a tourist. Broke our 3hr fast with a gelato, followed by a bottle of red wine. We don’t have bathroom in this room, but do have a basin and bidet.
Had a good look around the area near us, including a few of the who-knows-how-many churches, some of which have been remarkable. The age of the city is so palpable – 1600 is positively recent.
