Franciscan monastery cloisters
Began with the ethnographic museum in the old granary, which had very good displays, then a simply dreadful one about a Croatian writer, and a very ordinary natural history one. However the walk around the walls is a must. It was a bit wearying especially after yesterday’s climb, but a very enjoyable couple of hours working our way around the top of the wall, with interesting things to see in and out of the walled city.

Roofs of Dubrovnik
Three-quarters of the roofs have been replaced after the early 90s bombardment by Yugoslav, Serb and Montenegrin forces, but have all been repaired and replaced. We imagine a few people threw rocks or used sticks to make sure they qualified for the UN replacement funding! Unfortunately they have lost permanently the patina and variation that the old inconsistent tiles had, but the sea of orange roofs is pretty special. Finished off with the climb up to the isolated fort outside our window, by which time we were beginning to think that tourism in the Netherlands has a lot of appeal compared to these hills.

Pile Harbour below our room
Pretty tired so back to our room for a cold beer and lie down! Still fine and clear weather. Coolish morning and evening, but that’s OK.
On wandering around looking for a suitable meal, went past our first night’s place, and got asked by our waiter to ask the kitchen for tri rakija, which earned me a free one to be tossed back. They refer to them as "antibiotics" which isn't far from the mark. Not much would survive a rakija. Another milestone at dinner tonight – we sent a pizza back for a burnt base. Two returns in three days, it’s a record for us. Not only did the waiter give us a new pizza, he also gave us another ½ litre of red wine! We didn’t really need it but forced it down.
